Meet the Founder: Mark Braun
Turning Obstacles into Golden Opportunities
"I don’t look at a disability as a stumbling block or an obstacle. I look at it as: This is who I am, and I'm going to take it and run with it." — Mark Braun
The Journey of a Pioneer
Mark Braun's life story is a testament to fierce determination, resilience, and the transformative power of sport. Born in Jamaica with spina bifida, Mark faced immense medical and structural hurdles early in life. After being adopted by a deeply supportive family in Mounds View, Minnesota, he underwent more than a dozen corrective surgeries, defying the odds by learning to stand, walk short distances, and ultimately, fly on the athletic track.
Mark was introduced to adaptive sports at Minnesota's Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, where his natural athletic gifts immediately shone. He went on to become a four-time junior national wheelchair basketball champion and a gold medalist in the sport.
However, Mark truly cemented his legacy when he discovered wheelchair track and field. A natural-born speedster, he made Minnesota sports history at Irondale High School by becoming the first-ever male wheelchair athlete to compete in the MSHSL State Track & Field Championships, pioneering the inclusion of wheelchair divisions alongside able-bodied peers.
Elite Excellence
Mark’s drive propelled him directly onto the international stage. As an elite T54 wheelchair sprinter representing Team USA, Mark has:
Ranked as one of the fastest wheelchair sprinters in the United States.
Represented the nation at multiple World Para Athletics Championships (including Doha 2015 and Dubai 2019).
Competed globally at the ParaPan American Games in Toronto and Lima.
Beyond his medals, Mark has spent years serving as a youth development mentor, coach, and international advocate for children with disabilities—proving that with the right support, there are no limits to what an athlete can achieve.
Why I Started APEX Para Athletics
While recreational adaptive sports programs are crucial for introduction and community bonding, Mark recognized a massive, critical gap in the domestic landscape: the pipeline from recreational participant to elite Paralympic podium contender was fractured.
Too often, talented adaptive athletes in Minnesota and across the Midwest plateau because they lack access to high-performance coaching, tech-aligned custom equipment, and a daily, rigorous training culture built strictly for elite development.
Mark founded APEX Para Athletics to change that narrative.
The APEX Mission
APEX Para Athletics is not just a sports club; it is a specialized high-performance development programming organization designed to scout, train, and refine future Paralympic potential.
By providing advanced tactical coaching, specialized equipment tracking, comprehensive classification guidance, and elite-tier competition travel, APEX builds the infrastructure required to take promising regional athletes and transition them onto national team rosters.
Guided by Mark's firsthand experience within Team USA, APEX Para Athletics bridges the gap between raw ambition and the international podium—empowering the next generation of adaptive champions to reach their absolute peak.
